If biological code is generated by recombining two separate codebases, at what point does consciousness emerge? That is the question of The Sum of My Parts. Consciousness is only observed in biological systems, and the assembly of the wetware that runs it is encoded in a DNA manual. If you make a change in that manual, the ability to run consciousness may disappear.
The Sum of My Parts is a circular sculpture loaded with the sequenced DNA of my parents. Each display corresponds to one chromosome and continuously simulates a step in parental nucleotide selection. Presented as a stochastic process, there is a probability, even if small, of creating a code that supports consciousness. Do we become aware when biological code inevitably aligns, or is our subjective experience more than our codebase?
